What is the Open Graph Protocol?

Open Graph is an open standard (created by Facebook in 2010) that makes any web page a rich social-graph object via meta property=og:... tags in the HTML head. It tells social platforms what title, description, and image to display when the URL is shared.

Do OG tags affect Google ranking?

No. Google has confirmed that OG tags do not directly affect search ranking. OG tags are for social crawlers, not Googlebot. However, better social previews lead to higher click-through rates, which indirectly improves traffic and engagement signals.

What is the best OG image size?

1200x630 pixels (2:1 ratio) is recommended across all platforms. Facebook requires a minimum of 600x315. Twitter large cards need at least 800x418. Keep images under 5MB and prefer JPEG or WebP format.

How long before social previews update?

Facebook caches previews for 24+ hours — use the Sharing Debugger to force a re-scrape. Twitter/X updates in minutes. LinkedIn uses the Post Inspector. Slack and Discord fetch fresh data on each paste.

Should og:url match the canonical URL?

Yes. A mismatched og:url causes platforms to consolidate engagement metrics under og:url instead of the actual URL, fragmenting share counts across UTM parameter variants. Always set og:url to the canonical URL.
